CERTIFICATION

National Certification for the Patient Transporter… A dream come true.

The dream of nation-wide certification of hospital-based patient transporters, a 4-year effort of NAHTM, took another giant step toward realization in Albuquerque, NM, the site of Conference ’04. The workforce development specialists of Impact Training Corporation, Jorie Philippi and Ruthann Walsh, delivered the first session geared to prepare patient transport managers to administer the course content required for the NAHTM Patient Transporter Certification program. Jorie and Ruthann developed and implemented the highly regarded St. Joseph’s/Candler model, the basis for the NAHTM program, that is currently certified by Savannah Technical College and the State of Georgia.

The course content of the NAHTM Patient Transporter Certification program is reflected in 3 courses. Each course has an accompanying book:

  • CHOICES: Ethics for the Workplace
  • Strategic Skill Building for Patient Transporters
  • Patient Transporter Technical Skills Training

The content of the third course, Patient Transporter Technical Skills Training, which reflects curriculum to teach Patient Transporter core competencies, was based on national practice and standards. Through a series of member surveys and focus group activity held over 3 conferences (2001-2003), performance indicators were identified and core competencies were developed. These common, national practices and standards were incorporated into the training program. Any Transporter, or aspiring Transporter, from throughout the country can participate in the curriculum and training and successfully meet the competency standards to receive the designation of certified through NAHTM

To establish the training points that would prove necessary for the successful delivery of the National Patient Transporter Certification curriculum and training, a task force, comprised of the then NAHTM Executive Committee and 2 NAHTM members, Frank Campbell and Cardell Jones, worked with Impact Training Corporation in Savannah, Georgia in August 2003. Over 3 intensely focused days, the 6-member task force met their goal. The results of their efforts is a 2-day seminar designed to prepare the enrollee to administer all phases of the certification curriculum: life and work related choices and ethics, customer service strategies, learning and thinking skills and relevant core competencies -all vital skills needed by the Patient Transporter. Those 20 intrepid souls who participated in the first official session in Albuquerque can attest that the training proved to be fast paced, inter-active, inspiring and thought provoking.

The 20 pioneers, along with the “ Savannah 6”, are the first NAHTM members from throughout the country who are trained to deliver the curriculum for the NAHTM Patient Transporter Certification program. These NAHTM members are as follows:

A notice will be sent through the mail to all current members as well. At the NAHTM Conference 2005, to be held in San Francisco, CA, Impact Training will offer the third session. In addition, to the third training session, a focus group will develop the first phase for the course to “train the trainer”. It is NAHTM’s intent to develop an in-house roster of member who are trained to train other members/managers in the curriculum delivery of the NAHTM Patient Transporter Certification program. The focus group will be comprised of those individuals who have been trained to administer the NAHTM Patient Transporter Certification program curriculum and have completed, or are in the process, of implementing the program at their respective institutions.
